FACEBOOK AND NETFLIX FORM AN ALLIANCE — BUT NOT IN U.S.

Reed Hastings joined Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on stage at Facebook’s f8 conference on Thursday, where the two announced a joint arrangement that would allow Canadian users to connect their Facebook and Netflix accounts to see what their friends are watching and quickly order up a movie or TV show for streaming via the Facebook site. Hastings acknowledged that Netflix had failed to integrate a chat adjunct into its own site, then took a swipe at Apple’s attempt to do the same thing. The Netflix effort, he said, “suffered all the failures of — oh, I don’t know do you use Ping in iTunes? Like, no.” Hastings said the Netflix-Facebook integration will also be launched in Latin America but won’t be available in the U.S. for the time being because of a federal regulation, in effect since 1988, that bars companies from disclosing people’s video rental habits. Hastings said that he is working to have the rule amended.
