REAL STEEL STEALS BOX OFFICE (Updated)

Disney/DreamWorks’s Real Steel clambered into the box-office ring and clobbered its opponents over the weekend, raking in an estimated $27.3 million domestically and an additional $22.1 million overseas (19 countries). Sony’s The Ides of March was a distant second with $10.4-million debut. Last week’s champ, Warner Bros.’ Dolphin Tale, held over nicely, sliding 37 percent in its third week to $9.2 million to place third. Sony’s Moneyball also held well, winding up with $7.5 million to bring its domestic total to $49.3 million. In fifth place was Summit Entertainment’s cancer dramedy 50/50, which dropped only 34 percent from last weekend to $5.5 million, bringing its 10-day box-office tally to $17.3 million.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo:
1. Real Steel, $27.3 million; 2. The Ides of March, $10.4 million; 3. Dolphin Tale, $9.2 million; 4. Moneyball, $7.5 million; 5. 50/50, $5.5 million; 6. Courageous, $4.6 million; 7. The Lion King, $4.55 million; 8. Dream House, $4.5 million; 9. What’s Your Number?, $3.1 million; 10. Abduction, $2.9 million.
