GERVAIS INVITED TO RETURN TO SCENE OF CRIME: THE GOLDEN GLOBES

Not only is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association willing to let bygones be bygones, but the group, which stages the annual Golden Globes Awards, has invited Ricky Gervais to host the show for the second year in a row. Trade reports indicated that the vote was far from unanimous and that the members bowed to pressure from NBC, which airs the awards telecast and which pays the HFPA a substantial licensing fee to do so. In a statement announcing Gervais’s selection, the HFPA conceded that “not everyone is happy with the decision.” In his appearance earlier this year, Gervais hurled comedic insults at the group itself and said that he had to “help the HFPA president off the toilet and pop his teeth back in.” He made similar cracks about some of the celebrities in the audience. (In its statement, posted on its website today (Wednesday), the HFPA called them “blunt one-liners.”) Until a few weeks ago, no one, including Gervais, expected that he would ever be invited back. And even when rumors began cropping up that Gervais had been meeting with leaders of the HFPA, many in the industry dismissed them as preposterous.
