NEWS CORP SAYS IT WON’T BUY THE DODGERS AGAIN

News Corp COO Chase Carey appears to have shot down widespread reports on Wednesday that its Fox Sports division might make a bid for the team at a bankruptcy auction after weighing the costs of buying broadcast rights against the cost of an outright acquisition. But at a conference call to discuss the company’s latest quarterly earnings, Carey said the company has no plans to buy the team that it sold to Frank McCourt in 2004 for $421 million, a deal that also included broadcast rights until 2013. Currently those rights may be worth more than the team itself, but operating a team can be an expensive proposition in its own right, something that News Corp learned when it previously owned the Dodgers. But ESPN blogger Jon Weisman theorized today that Fox might end up as a minority stakeholder in the team in order to protect its broadcast rights.
