Overnight ratings for Sunday night were thrown into confusion today (Monday) after an afternoon NFL game on CBS ran more than 30 minutes into primetime in the Eastern and Central time zones. CBS initially claimed a win for the night, citing strong ratings out of the game for 60 Minutes plus a solid performance by the season finale of Survivor: South Pacific and the one-hour reunion show. NBC, the usual Sunday-night winner, was by no means ready to throw in the towel. The numbers were close, it noted, and ratings for live telecasts — like Sunday Night Football’s coverage of the Baltimore-San Diego game — almost invariably wind up higher when final figures are compiled. Stay tuned for those final figures, due to be released later today.
