SALES SLIDE FOR KUNG FU PANDA 2 AND OTHER DVD’S

Time was when animated movies accounted for a huge percentage of DVD sales. After all, children never seem to tire of playing the same movie multiple times. But now they can do so without touching a disc — if their parents subscribe to an online rental site like Netflix, which allows kids to watch the same movie as often as they like. The result is that animation studios are seeing a plunge in sales of DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. DreamWorks Animation has been particularly hard hit. Its shares are now trading at less than $17.00, down from their 52-week high of $30.73. Analysts are keeping a particularly close eye on demand for family films on DVD during December since they make a popular gift for children at Christmas. While all such DVDs have taken a hit, DreamWorks’s Kung Fu Panda 2 is being clobbered, particularly the premium-priced Blu-ray Disc combo pack. On Monday BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield lowered his previous estimate for Kung Fu Panda 2 sales by 19 percent and lowered it for Puss in Boots by 25 percent.
