Scotland Yard has made a 17th arrest in connection with its investigation of voicemail hacking conducted by the now-defunct News of the World. Although it did not release the name of the arrested figure, news reports indicated that the person was Cheryl Carter, who had worked as former News International CEO Rebekah Brooks’s personal assistant for 19 years. Recently she had worked as the beauty editor for the London Sun, another newspaper published by News International, the British unit of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Metropolitan Police released few details of the arrest, except to say that it was made “on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.” Brooks herself was arrested in July in connection with the scandal.
