NEWS CORP TO LAUNCH HISPANIC CHANNEL

January 24, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

News Corp is planning to launch a new Spanish-language cable TV network, but its content will not be coming from Mexico, which produces the lion’s share of network programs for Hispanic broadcasters in the U.S., but from Colombia. The company announced Monday that it is partnering with the Colombian network RCN Television Group to create the network, which will be called MundoFox when it launches in the fall. It will be competing with the leading Hispanic channel in the U.S., Univision, and with No. 2, NBC-owned Telemundo. In at least its start-up phase, the channel plans to broadcast a heavy diet of “telenovelas” — or limited-run soap operas — and will be relying on news from RCN’s all-news corporate sibling NTV24.
