Final Nielsen figures for Sunday night’s Oscar telecast on ABC put the audience count at 39.34 million. That number is a tad below the 39.50 million that the Grammys wound up with two weeks earlier, but the difference is moot. Nielsen’s margin of error is plus or minus about 310,000; therefore the two awards telecasts essentially wound up in a dead heat. In any case, the Oscars drew more than three times the number of viewers that watched each of the shows on CBS, Fox, and NBC — combined! Meanwhile, overnight ratings for Monday put Fox on top with 14.24 million viewers, thanks to its coverage of the Daytona 500. Those numbers cut into results for the usual Monday winner, NBC’s The Voice, which dropped 10 percent. However, the network’s Smash saw a 2.4 percent audience increase from last week.
