21 JUMP STREET TO JUMP TO NO. 1
Sony’s 21 Jump Street, inspired by the 1980s’ TV series featuring Johnny Depp, is expected to jump to the top of the box office this weekend with around $30-35 million, according to industry forecasters. It’s the only new film opening wide, although a couple of high-profile/low-budget features are also debuting this weekend in a few hundred markets — Jeff, Who Lives at Home, from the brothers Mark and Jay Duplass, and Casa de Mi Padre, starring Will Ferrell. Meanwhile, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax will be entering its third weekend in second place, according to box-office pundits, who are predicting that it will rake in around $20 million. The news for the costly flop John Carter is not expected to improve, with most predictions coming in at around $10-15 million, putting it in third place.
