Simon Cowell has indicated he will pull the plug on The X Factor if ratings do not improve next season. While he was referring to the longer-running British version of the show in an interview with today’s (Monday) London Daily Express, his words would also seem to be applicable to the U.S. version, whose ratings fell far short of Cowell’s predictions at the beginning of the season. Cowell told the newspaper that he would rather that the show “fall off the cliff on numbers than deteriorate slowly.” He likened a slow erosion of the ratings to a “death from a thousand cuts.” Should he see such a fate next year, he said, he would probably say, “Right, that’s the end of it. Let’s start something new.” Indeed, he added, he already has “something in development which could replace it if we get to that point.”
