A German study of teenagers in six European countries has concluded that drinking scenes in Hollywood blockbusters significantly influence a large number of them to engage in binge drinking. The study, headed by Reiner Hanewinkel of the Institute for Therapy and Health Research in Kiel and published in Pediatrics magazine, concluded that 14 percent of teenagers are more likely to binge drink after watching a movie in which the characters drink. “We did not expect this clear finding, but it shows how influential media are in a young person’s life,” Hanewinkel told CNN. “Hollywood blockbusters are distributed worldwide, and they have an impact not only on U.S. teens but also abroad.”
