UPDATE:
Daily Variety reported on Saturday that Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax earned an estimated $17.4 million on Friday and appears likely to wind up with around $60 million for the weekend.

(Earlier)The box office for The Lorax should be as green as Dr. Seuss’s eggs this weekend, forecasters predict. Some pundits are saying that the animated film from Universal’s Illumination Entertainment could take in $50-60 million. That would be in line with the company’s previous release, Despicable Me, which opened in 2010 with $56.4 million. Also opening this weekend is the latest “found footage” feature, Project X, which follows a trio of high school kids planning the biggest party in the school’s history. The Warner Bros. flick is expected to earn around $20-25 million. Meanwhile, the Weinstein Co. will be adding 800 theaters to the relative handful that have been showing the Oscar-winning The Artist for the past 15 weeks. It has earned about $33 million domestically.
