While there has been a good amount of handwringing recently over the failure of the U.S. version of Simon Cowell’s The X Factor to generate the kind of over-the-top ratings that American Idol has enjoyed, there was no doubt nothing but cheers on Monday at Fremantle Media, which co-produces the show with Cowell’s Syco Productions. (It also produces American Idol, as well as domestic Idols in 39 other countries.) Its parent, Bertelsmann-controlled RTL, the largest broadcasting group in Europe, reported a 13.9 percent increase in net profit to $914 million, and singled out for credit the U.S. launch of The X Factor, which, it said, drove profits of the Fremantle Media unit to $188 million on revenue of $1.88 billion. In a filing, RTL noted that the X Factor franchise not only expanded to the U.S. but also to eight other countries, bringing its total presence to 29. In addition, Fremantle widened the presence of another major talent contest, —‘s Got Talent to six other countries, bringing the presence of that show to 45 countries in all.
