Giving a much-needed boost to Oprah Winfrey’s struggling cable channel OWN, Comcast will expand the number of homes that it can be received in on its cable systems to 17 million, an increase of 21 percent, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Monday). That will put the channel into a total of 83 million homes, up from 80 million. In addition, the Journal said, Comcast will begin paying subscriber fees for the channel. Like many other cable systems, Comcast is not paying anything at all to carry the channel and those cable systems that are are paying an average of just two cents a household per month, according to researchers SNL Kagan. The newspaper said it could not be determined how much Comcast has agreed to pay for it.
