Even with its ratings way down from where they once were, Fox’s American Idol, with three hours landing in the Nielsen top ten, gave the network a victory among the demographic that advertisers like to target — adults 18-49. The reason may have been that the competition’s shows were also way down from where they once were; indeed, some plummeted to season lows — and in some cases even series lows. NBC was the only network that improved its ratings from the comparable week a year ago, but it seemingly had nowhere else to go but up, given its last-place standing. Nevertheless, its highest-rated show The Voice failed to come out on top on Monday night, losing out to CBS’s Two and a Half Men. Ratings were down from last year for the two principal evening newscasts, with NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams retaining the lead with 8.4 million viewers. ABC World News with Diane Sawyer followed with 7.1 million viewers. And although the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley placed third with 5.8 million viewers, its ratings were the only ones to improve versus last year’s when Katie Couric anchored the newscast. Overall, CBS continued to rule among total adults, scoring a 5.2 household rating and a 9 share. ABC placed second with a 5.0/8, followed by Fox with a 4.2/7. NBC trailed with a 3.3/6.

Dancing with the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 9.1/14; 6. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.3/14; 7. Castle, ABC, 7.3/12; 8. NCIS: Los Angeles, CBS, 7.1/11; 9. The Good Wife, CBS, 6.8/10; 9. (Tie) Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.8/10.
