TITANIC STRONG OVERSEAS, BUT NOT A WINNER
Titanic had a stronger relaunch overseas than it did in North America, earning an estimated $35.5 million in 84 countries. But it was not all clear sailing, as it came in second behind the second week of Wrath of the Titans, which generated $43 million in ticket sales. Following in third place was Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games wiith $25.5 million. In fourth place, American Reunion (overseas title: American Pie: Reunion) made a solid debut with $19.3 million. Raunchy U.S. comedies generally have a tough time grabbing audiences above, and this was the strongest opening weekend abroad ever for the American Pie franchise. (It debuted in first place in Australia and Russia.) Rounding out the weekend’s top five on the overseas box office was Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, which picked up $11.8 million.
