That morning ratings race between NBC’s Today show and ABC’s Good Morning America is taking on all the trappings of a mano-a-mano Yankees-Red Sox battle (the current season excepted). A week after GMA beat Today by a razor thin margin — its first weekly win in 16 years — Today roared back last week to win by a substantial 240,000 viewers. (Today: 5.25 million; GMA 5.01 million) Among the key 25-54 age group, the NBC show’s lead was even greater — 380,000 (Today: 2.32 million; GMA: 1.94 million.) However, analysts pointed out that ratings for the current week should see-saw back in GMA’s favor next week, inasmuch as the ABC morning show was averaging 220,000 total viewers more than the NBC show through Wednesday. The Washington Post pointed out that when GMA took the crown two weeks ago, Today co-host Matt Lauer was on vacation. This week he is not.
