AVENGERS‘ FINAL OFFICIAL TALLY: $207.4 MILLION
Disney reported today (Monday) that ticket sales on Sunday for The Avengers was higher than its earlier estimate and that the final weekend tally came to $207.4 million. The Avengers thereby becomes the first movie ever to exceed $200 million over its first Friday-through-Sunday period. Disney further observed that the worldwide total for the Marvel movie has reached $654.8 million in just 12 days.

In its opening weekend, Disney/Marvel’s The Avengers not only exceeded the previous box-office record, it streaked past it by earning $200.3 million. Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which “only” earned $169.2 million last year, fell to No. 2 on the all-time list. By contrast all of the other films on the box-office top ten added up to just $36 million, beginning with Sony’s Think Like a Man with 8 million in second place, followed in third by Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games with $4.4 million. Opening in just 27 markets, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel collected $750,301 (or a solid $27,789 per theater). The Avengers also dominated the overseas markets, earning $151.5 million in its second weekend to bring its foreign total to $441.5 million, down just 18 percent from last weekend. Its two-day opening in China raked in $17.4 million.
