Universal may have been wise to move up the overseas debut of its tentpole release Battleship to April so that it wouldn’t have to compete with the London Olympics and Euro 2012, the European soccer championship, but it might not have sufficiently taken into account competition from another studio’s tentpole — also moved ahead of its North American release. Disney/Marvel practically beached Battleship over the weekend as its Avengers grossed $185.1 million in 39 territories. By contrast, Battleship, in its third week, grossed $22.5 million in 50 territories, to bring its total gross after three weekends to $170.9 million.
