Delta Airlines has denied that it yanked its advertising from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart after receiving complaints from the Catholic League about Stewart’s joking remark last month that “perhaps women could protect their reproductive organs from unwanted medical intrusions with vagina mangers.” (He was satirically criticizing Fox News for denouncing the network’s pursuit of a so-called “war against Christmas” while ignoring the issues surrounding women’s reproductive rights and health that have given commentators rise to declare a right-wing “war on women.”) He then showed a photograph of a naked woman with a Christmas ornament of a Nativity scene between her legs. On Wednesday the Catholic League congratulated Delta for dropping its advertising from the show and encouraged its members — with more than 350,000 members, it is the largest lay Catholic organization in America — to fly the airline. Delta, however, denied that its decision had anything to do with “any opinions expressed” by Stewart. “We are constantly evaluating our advertising strategy and at this time no longer advertise during The Daily Show,” it said in a statement. On the other hand, Kellogg’s rejected the organization’s complaint outright. “Consumers speak most loudly when they vote with their remote control and change the channel or turn off the TV if a program does not fit their personal criteria,” it said. That prompted Catholic League President Bill Donohue to respond: “In other words, Kellogg’s is telling Christians to shove it. We will now send the indefensible picture to their senior management and board, as well as to community leaders, religious and secular, throughout Battle Creek, Michigan. We are also calling for a national boycott of all Kellogg’s cereals.”
