CONTRABAND DEBUTS AT NO. 1 ON DVD SALES CHART
The Mark Wahlberg crime drama Contraband, which opened far better than expected over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend in January, became the No. 1 film on the home video sales charts this past week, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. The Universal film pushed Paramount’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol out of the top spot on the sales chart but not out of the rental, inasmuch as Universal withholds its home-video releases from Netflix and Redbox, the nation’s leading renters, for 28 days. Home Media magazine also reported that anticipation over the theatrical release of The Avengers this coming weekend also spurred a leap in sales for previous movies featuring the individual superheroes. Neither sales nor rental figures are disclosed by the home video trackers.
