Google on Tuesday unveiled the latest device aimed at merging the Internet with television. Its Chromebox, manufactured by Samsung and using Google’s proprietary operating system, is expected to compete against Apple’s Mac Mini, which many consumers connect to their TV sets and use principally to record and play CDs and movies. (It can also be used for email, surfing the web, and other tasks usually associated with desktop or laptop computing.) The principal difference is one of price. Some retailers are offering the Chromebox for less than $330.00. Meanwhile, at a technology conference in California on Tuesday Apple chief Tim Cook said that the Apple TV box that the company sells for $99 remains “an area of intense interest for us.” He added, “We are going to keep pulling this string and see where it takes us.”
