Red Tails, which producer George Lucas financed out of his own pocket after the major studios spurned it, flew to first place on the Nielsen Video Scan First-Alert chart in its first week on retail shelves. The 20th Century Fox movie, which earned nearly $50 million domestically, is the first action film by a major studio in modern times to use an all-black cast. It tells the fictionalized story of the famed Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Second place on the DVD sales chart went to another Fox film, This Means War, starring Reese Witherspoon, while Disney’s debuting The Secret World of Arrietty came in third. Another new film on the DVD chart, Sony’s The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe, placed fourth. It was also the only film to make Home Media magazine’s rental chart, debuting at No. 1.
