3D DEVELOPER MAKING BIG PUSH IN CHINA

Hardly a day goes by, it seems, without news of another multimillion-dollar deal between the U.S. movie industry and China. The latest comes from RealD, a principal supplier of 3D technology to movie exhibitors. On Thursday, RealD said that it had signed a deal with China’s SMI Corporation to install 3D equipment in some 100 theaters in its Stellar International Cineplex chain. Noting that his company had only recently signed similar deals with four other exhibitors, RealD’s Edman Can said that it now has commitments to convert 2,000 screens in China to 3D. Propelling RealD’s growth in China is an agreement signed last February in which China agreed to raise the limit of foreign films imported into the country from 20 to 34, provided the additional 14 films are available in 3D or IMAX.
