Andrew Sarris, the longtime film critic of the Village Voice and later the New York Observer, has died in New York at the age of 83. In an obituary the Chicago Sun-Times‘s Roger Ebert said that when he first started out as a film critic he was strongly influenced by Sarris’s observations about the all-important role of the director in filmmaking and particularly was struck by his remark in Interviews with Film Directors: “Even art films have to make money and even commercial films have to make some statement.” Wrote Ebert: “This, to me, was a signpost pointing the direction that a daily newspaper film critic might choose.”
