Amid widespread reports that she had been fired as cohost of NBC’s Today show, Ann Curry surprised many by showing up for work on the show as usual. The New York Times, which first reported on its website Wednesday afternoon that NBC executives were preparing to replace Curry as early as next week, said today (Thursday) that the show’s producers had prepared to replace her on today’s show with Hoda Kotb, the co-host of the fourth hour of Today. Curry’s appearance this morning “began a new round of speculation in the television business about her future on the top-rated morning show,” the newspaper said. No mention of Curry’s rumored exodus was made during the show, but the Times said that when she wrote “Good morning” to her 1.2 million followers on Twitter during the show, her name quickly became a Twitter trend in the U.S. Several prominent newspapers had accepted the speculation as fact, including the New York Daily News, which headlined on its cover, “ANN’S CANNED.” Said the Washington Post: “With ‘Today’ ratings down, Curry is fall guy.” The Hollywood Reporter even named her replacement. “Savannah Guthrie [the show’s news anchor] is the likely successor,” the trade publication reported, citing unnamed sources.
