NBC had been hoping that the Today show would get a big bounce from the Olympics. It did, clobbering ABC’s Good Morning America for the entire two-week event. And on the first Monday following the Olympics, it remained ahead with a show that featured many of the winning U.S. athletes. And that was it. By Tuesday, GMA had regained the lead, and it has held it ever since. Commented today’s (Tuesday) New York Times: “The ratings … are the latest evidence that Good Morning America is gradually displacing the Today show as the most popular morning show in America.” However, the newspaper pointed out that Today, while behind in total viewers, remains ahead among the key demographic group, viewers 25-54. And GMA faces an additional challenge later this month when cohost Robin Roberts takes a leave of absence to receive a bone marrow transplant.
