A gunman on Wednesday barged into the offices of the conservative Family Research Council (FRC) in Washington DC, reportedly shouted denunciations of the group, and shot a guard in the arm before being subdued by the wounded guard and others. The man was reportedly carrying sandwiches from Chick-fil-A, the fast-food chain, whose CEO supports groups who oppose gay marriage. (Tony Perkins, the president of FRC, has mobilized his group in support of Chick-fil-A.) The suspect, Floyd Corkins II, was identified as a former volunteer at the DC Center for the LGBT Community, whose executive director, David Mariner, promptly issued a statement saying that he was “shocked” to learn that a volunteer for the group “could be the cause of such a tragic act of violence.” And Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes gay marriages, issued a statement saying, “Today’s attack is the clearest sign we’ve seen that labeling pro-marriage groups as ‘hateful’ must end.”
