It was only a pre-season contest between the Carolina Panthers and the New York Jets, but it returned NBC’s Sunday Night Football to the top spot on the Nielsen ratings list for last week. NBC nabbed two other spots on the top ten, the Tuesday performance edition of America’s Got Talent, which came in at No. 2, and the AGT results show on Wednesday, which came in at No. 5. All of the other shows in the top belonged to CBS, except for ABC’s news magazine 20/20, which wound up in a three-way tie for tenth place. During a slow news week, ratings for all three network evening newscasts took a hit, with NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams drawing 7.8 million viewers, followed by ABC World News with Diane Sawyer with 7.1 million. The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley once again trailed with 5.5 million viewers. Overall, CBS remained at the top of the list among total viewers with an average 3.8 household rating and a 7 share. NBC finished second with a 3.3/6. ABC placed third with a 2.7/5, while Fox trailed with a 2.3/4.
