A female police officer with the rank of detective chief inspector has been charged with misconduct in public office for allegedly passing information to a reporter for the now-defunct News of the World in 2010. DCI April Casburn is the first police officer to have been criminally charged in Scotland Yard’s investigation into reported bribes to police officer and other public officials by News of the World reporters (“Operation Elveden”). The official announcement did not indicate whether payment was made to Casburn for the information she allegedly provided, nor was the nature of the information disclosed. Reports indicated that she worked in Scotland Yard’s Specialist Operations Directorate, which oversees counter-terrorism and security of the royal family.
