LAUER DIDN’T BOOT CURRY, I DID, SAYS TODAY EXEC PRODUCER

Jim Bell, the executive producer of NBC’s Today show, insists that it was he and not Matt Lauer who made the decision to replace Ann Curry with Savannah Guthrie as co-anchor. “He is the host and does not have management responsibility,” Bell told the New York Times. “It was not his call. That was my call.” As for reports that Lauer insisted as a condition of re-signing with NBC that Curry be ousted, Bell maintained, “that’s absolutely not true.” As for the ratings slide that Today has experienced beginning in the weeks prior to Curry’s departure and continuing until today (with the exception of the Summer Olympics period) Bell attributed it to the decision of rival Good Morning America to increase its tabloid content. “Today is a more serious show,” he said.
