The box office could begin to sail out of the doldrums this weekend, propelled by the 3D animated monster spoof Hotel Transylvania and a well-reviewed time-travel drama, Looper, each coming from Sony. Tracking surveys indicate that the cartoon, which features the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and others, should scare up around $30-35 million, while the sci-fi flick, starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will probably debut in second place with $20-25 million. A third new release, the poorly reviewed Won’t Back Down, is expected to back down a lot, way down to around $3-5 million. Universal is also opening Pitch Perfect in 335 venues as a kind of preview of the film, which opens wide next weekend. It presumably is hoping for strong word-of-mouth to boost ticket sales for the comedy about a college a cappella group.
