71 COUNTRIES SUBMIT FOREIGN OSCAR ENTRIES — IRAN NOT AMONG THEM

Iran has made good on its threat to boycott next year’s Academy Awards to protest the Academy’s silence regarding the anti-Islamic video, Innocence of Muslims. Although its planned entry, Reza Mirkarimi’s A Cube of Sugar, was regarded as a probable strong contender for the best foreign language award, it did not appear on the list of 71 films that the Academy said were submitted for consideration for next year’s honors. The figure, the Academy nevertheless observed, was a record, with several countries submitting entries for the first time. Among the strongest contenders is the Austrian entry Amour from director Michael Haneke, which won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and France’s The Intouchables, from directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, Europe’s biggest box office hit this year.
