BBC AND U.K. POLICE TO INVESTIGATE CHARGES AGAINST LATE TV HOST SAVILE

The BBC has agreed to cooperate with Scotland Yard in their investigation of reports that Jimmy Savile, its legendary host who died last October, had raped and abused underage girls repeatedly, some as young as 12. The allegations were due to be aired publicly tonight on an ITV documentary, in which at least six alleged victims were interviewed, according to early reports. However, similar allegations were made on the BBC’s own Newsnight program but were spiked for “editorial reasons,” according to Newsnight editor Peter Rippon, who maintained that the decision to shelve the program was his, although he conceded that he had discussed the story with BBC executives. Rippon posted a statement on the BBC website saying, “‘I was told in the strongest terms that I must be guided by editorial considerations only and that I must not let any wider considerations about the BBC affect my judgment.” Meanwhile, news reports indicated that Savile could be posthumously stripped of the knighthood that he received in 1990 if the allegations are substantiated. Reports said that such a move would be “virtually unprecedented.”
