Harvey Weinstein insisted that the movie SEAL Team Six, a drama about the killing of Osama bin Laden, be reedited to include documentary footage featuring President Obama, the New York Times disclosed today, a decision, commented the newspaper, that “is virtually certain to bolster claims that the approximately 90-minute film amounts to a political stunt.” The movie is scheduled to be screened on the National Geographic Channel on November 4, two days before the election, and released the following day on Netflix. The Times observed that the movie, which was first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, has been recut with the news footage inserted “to strengthen Mr.Obama’s role and provide a window into decision-making in the White House.” But Howard T. Owens, CEO of National Geographic Channel, maintained that the channel had scrutinized the film in advance and had insisted that a scene that showed Mitt Romney appear to oppose the raid be removed. “We wouldn’t air this if it were propaganda,” he told the Times.
