DILLER’S MEDIA COMPANY PULLS PLUG ON NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE

Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActiveCorp has pulled the plug on the print edition of Newsweek magazine, which, it said, will published its final edition on December 31. It will then be offered by subscription as an online version titled Newsweek Global. Some of its content will also reportedly be available free on The Daily Beast, its sibling online publication. Several analysts gave Newsweek Global little chance of succeeding as a digital-only publication. Asking, “Why keep Newsweek on life support?” Reuters media columnist Felix Salmon commented; “Newsweek is going to have to suffer a painful and lingering death. There’s no way that first-rate journalists are going to have any particular desire to write for this doomed and little-read publication, especially if their work is stuck behind a paywall.”
