The San Francisco Giants swept the Detroit Tigers in the fourth game of the World Series on Sunday, but they were no match for Sunday Night Football. Fox’s telecast of the final game of the Series averaged 13.76 million viewers. Ironically, those ratings were boosted by an earlier football overrun, which drew 28 million viewers in the 7:00 p.m. hour. While the first hour of the baseball game attracted more than 17 million viewers, that number dwindled to 11.9 million in the final hour. It was the opposite story for NBC’s Sunday Night Football (New Orleans vs. Denver), where the numbers remained steady at around 16.17 million throughout the night. However, the combination of the football overrun and the baseball game gave Fox the ratings victory of the night with a total average of 17.32 million viewers to NBC’s 13.16 million.
