RATINGS: PALIN WAS A BIGGER DRAW THAN RYAN

Sarah Palin was a bigger draw than Paul Ryan. That is the inescapable conclusion to be drawn from overnight Nielsen ratings for Thursday night’s vice presidential debate. With Congressman Ryan seated opposite Vice President Joe Biden, the debate drew 51.4 million viewers across 12 networks. When Biden faced Palin in the 2008 debate 69.4 million tuned in. But while that result represented a 26-percent drop, it nevertheless represented an increase over every other vice-presidential debate since the George H.W. Bush-Geraldine Ferarro debate in 1984, which drew 56.7 million viewers. Once again, younger viewers tuned out Thursday’s coverage. Only 7.2 million persons in the 18-34 age group watched — or 14 percent of the entire audience. By contrast, 26.7 million viewers in the 55-plus demo, or 51.9 percent of the total, monitored the telecast.
