TYLER PERRY TO BRING SCRIPTED SHOWS TO OPRAH’S NETWORK
Oprah Winfrey’s cable channel OWN plans to air its first original scripted TV series next year produced by Madea creator Tyler Perry. Perry already has three shows airing on TBS, House of Payne, Meet the Browns and For Better or Worse. Today’s (Tuesday) Los Angeles Times reported that the deal between Winfrey and Perry will result in Perry shelving his ambitions to launch his own cable network. The newspaper said that Perry had discussed plans for “Tyler TV” with Lionsgate, which releases his movies, and One Equity Partners, co-owner of the TV Guide Channel. The Times said that Perry decided to drop his plans for the channel in the belief that a deal with Winfrey would be less risky. The New York Post reported that the deal calls for Perry to receive a “small stake” in OWN, which is backed by Discovery Communications.
