Days after it was announced that Variety had been acquired by Penske Media, the new owner has announced a major personnel change. Brian Gott is out as publisher; Michelle Sobrino-Stearns is in — becoming the first woman to hold the top position at the trade publication in its 107-year history. In a statement, Penske said, “This is a major moment for Variety and Michelle Sobrino, and it is clear to me that she is ready to lead this brand as its publisher.” Meanwhile, Sharon Waxman, who oversees TheWrap.com, a direct competitor of Nikki Finke’s Deadline.com, which is also owned by Penske, claimed that she had received a letter from Penske’s attorney warning her not to try poaching any of Finke’s journalists. Commented Waxman: “What is Jay worried about exactly? That other news organizations will try to hire the Deadline staff while he is focused on Variety? Shouldn’t he be worried about folks poaching from Variety rather than Deadline? We’ve gotten these letters from Penske before and we have a special file where we put them.”
