A somewhat cryptic message posted by Nikki Finke on her website on Saturday has touched off speculation that an announcement is imminent that Deadline’s corporate parent, Penske Media, has acquired the 107-year-old trade journal Variety. Finke’s message read: “The Deadline Team won’t provide 24/7 news coverage for at least the next week. One of the reasons is [Deadline Hollywood] business affecting the entire staff in LA, NY and Europe. As a result, we’ll probably miss some breaking stories and delay monitoring some comments, emails and phone calls. Please cut us some slack for the duration.” Some reports indicated that an annoucement of the Variety deal could come as early as tonight, when Deadline and Penske Media host individual parties at the Soho House in West Hollywood. According to, Deadline’s entire staff, including European writers, are expected to come together for the first time at that event (although the reclusive Finke is not expected to be there). Whatever business might be occupying Finke’s attention, it did not prevent her from being the first to disclose this morning that Seth MacFarlane will be hosting the Oscars next year.
