BREAKING DAWN — PT. 2 OPENS ABOUT FLAT WITH PT. 1

November 17, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

As anticipated, Twilight finale Breaking Dawn — Part 2 opened big with 10:00 p.m. and midnight screenings on Thursday taking in an estimated $30.4 million. That’s about what Part 1 earned a year ago ($30.3 million), when it, too, opened on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Although the figure was huge when compared with similar Thursday-night openings, it failed even to come close to the $43.5 million that the finale of the Harry Potter films earned from midnight screenings only in July of last year. Indeed, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse collected $30 million just from midnight screenings in 2010. (That film, however, opened in June, when teenage girls — the movie’s target audience — did not have to go to school the following day.) Box office forecasters are sticking to their predictions that the weekend will produce a record opening for the franchise of $150 million or more.
