Newly named CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker said during a conference call with reporters on Thursday that he aims to make the cable news channel “relevant, vibrant and exciting.” He did not offer details on how he planned to do that, but he did indicate that he would not follow the example of Fox News and MSNBC and focus on controversial commentators. “I think the most important thing is that CNN continue to remain editorially independent,” he said. He nevertheless suggested that it might be a good idea for CNN to revive some of the cross-party/cross-ideology confrontations that were once popular on the channel such as Crossfire and Capital Gang. “News,” he said, “is about more than politics and war, we need to broaden that definition of what news is, while maintaining the standards of CNN’s journalistic excellence.”
