DREAMWORKS ANIMATION’S STOCK FALLS ON RISE OF THE GUARDIANS‘ SO-SO DEBUT

The disappointing box-office performance of DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians was reflected on Wall Street on Monday as the company’s shares dropped about 5 percent. Nevertheless, today’s (Tuesday) New York Times suggested, it could have been worse. Guardians may only have taken in $32.3 million over the five-day holiday, but when DWA’s How to Train Your Dragon opened with $43.7 million in 2010 — also regarded at the time as a disappointment — shares in the company dropped 9.2 percent. “The Dragon sell-off may have taught investors a lesson,” the Times commented, noting that the movie eventually went on to take in $495 million worldwide. At the close of trading today, shares of DreamWorks Animation were up about 1 percent.
