It’s not quite the delicious question that “Who shot J.R.?” was, but “How will J.R. die?” will certainly be a question that will have Dallas fans buzzing until the end of the current season on TNT. A spokesman for Channel 5 which airs the series in the U.K., told the London Sunday Independent that a script is being rewritten to incorporate the death of the character, played by Larry Hagman, who died in Dallas on Saturday of complications from throat cancer at age 81. Hagman, who had his first TV starring role in the 1960s as astronaut Tony Nelson opposite Barbara Eden in I Dream of Jeannie, began portraying J.R. Ewing in 1978 — arguably the most iconic character in a dramatic series ever. In its obituary the Dallas Morning News observed that, as Ewing, Hagman achieved “the kind of international fame known only by the likes [of] the Beatles and Muhammad Ali.” He had reprised the Ewing character in the reboot of the series that launched on TNT earlier this year and quickly became the No. 1 new adult drama on cable TV, drawing an average of 5.3 million viewers. The Hollywood Reporter said on Saturday that Hagman will appear in six of the fifteen episodes of season two (he appeared in ten episodes during the first season) and that the producers are working on giving him “a proper send-off.”
