Two Iranian films are scheduled to be screened at the 35th Cairo International film Festival during the coming week, but neither director of the two films or anyone else associated with them will be on hand to discuss them or to receive awards if they should win. Iranian news media reported on Thursday that Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refused to issue visas for the filmmakers. One of the films, The Private Life of Mr & Mrs., directed by Ruhollah Hejazi, is due to be screened in competition, while another film, Flight of the Kites, directed by Ali Qavitan, is due to be shown in the — ironically named — International Human Rights Films section. In reporting on Egypt’s action, the English-language Tehran Times noted pointedly that a “large group of Egyptian cineastes visit[ed] Iran during the second week of November at Iran Cinema Organization’s invitation.”
