The announcement on Tuesday that Lucasfilm, which is being acquired by Disney, will produce three more episodes of Star Wars may have come as a surprise to most of the industry, but it did not to Mark Hamill, who portrayed Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy. In an interview with Vulture.com, Hamill said that George Lucas invited him to lunch with Carrie Fisher, where he remarked, “We decided we’re going to do Episodes 7, 8, and 9.” Hamill, who is now 61 (he was 26 when the original Star Wars was released) dodged a question about whether he and Fisher will be appearing in the sequels, saying only that “until we know more, it’s hard to make any comment other than congratulations to George.” Referring to Lucas’s previous assertions that further Star Wars sequels were unlikely because the saga had a beginning, middle and an end, Hamill said that he could “see both sides of it,” noting that “there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material.”
