Neither ABC News nor Diane Sawyer has responded to a flood of bl og comments and tweets noting that the anchorwoman appeared drunk during election-night coverage Tuesday. Viewers could not help but be puzzled by Sawyer’s slurred and stumbling speech, tipsy body language — and, perhaps most of all, senseless questions to correspondents. (At one point she asked Jake Tapper at Obama headquarters why an exclamation point had been added to the campaign’s “Forward!” motto.) Frazier Moore, the TV writer for the Associated Press, filed a report that began: “Diane Sawyer’s Election Night performance left some viewers asking if she had begun celebrating Tuesday’s election a bit early.” New York Times media writer Brian Stelter tweeted: “Diane Sawyer’s name is trending. Many people saying she seems drunk on air. Alternative theory: she gets this way when she’s really tired.” A new Twitter handle, @DrunkDianeSawyer was quickly put into play, collecting hundreds of goofy comments. (Sample: “ABC projects that Diane Sawyer will be wearing panties on her head by the end of the night.” A clip from the ABC coverage was posted on YouTube titled, “Diane Sawyer Was Sh**faced.” The gossip website TMZ commented, “Lots of viewers turned off their TV sets wondering if Sawyer was anchoring with a .12 blood alcohol level.” However, the London Daily Mail quoted an unnamed senior TV source at the network as saying, “Diane’s fine, she’s exhausted.” He noted that she had spent many sleepless nights preparing for the election coverage “and I think that came at the expense of the broadcast.” Maybe not. Several Twitter users said they were tuning out of the coverage they were watching on other networks to see Sawyer plastered.
