As was the case a year ago, Justin Bieber was again the Big Winner at Sunday Night’s American Music Awards (Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Album, Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist), but his appeal as a guaranteed audience winner seemed to have faded somewhat from a year ago, given the special’s overnight ratings. According to Nielsen, it attracted a record-low 9.47 million viewers, down a whopping 22 percent from the 12.07 million who tuned in a year ago. (After picking up his first trophy, the Canadian teen idol, sounding as if he had been listening to too much political rhetoric during the recent U.S. election, remarked caustically. “This is for all the haters that thought that I was here for maybe one or two years.”) The Biggest Winner of the night, of course, was NBC’s Sunday Night Football contest between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, which averaged 15.80 million viewers, peaking in the 8:30 half-hour with 16.51 million. (Earlier in the evening an NFL overrun on CBS counted 19.54 million viewers.)
